Anthony Prince, Executive Director

I have had a long career in labor and law. At age 17, I served as the Chief Shop Steward for the Teamsters Local 986, in Vernon, California -- the youngest elected chief steward in Teamsters history -- and as the Safety Committee Chair for Steelworkers Local 65 at U.S. Steel Corp. South (Chicago) Works where I established the local's first-ever Unemployed Members Committee. I served as Director of Collective Bargaining for SEIU-Healthcare Wisconsin; Legal Counsel to the Teamsters Local 705 in Chicago; as a Business Agent for the Engineers and Scientists of California, Local 20; and as a National Field Representative/Assistant Counsel for National Treasury Employees Union in Oakland and Fresno, among other union roles.

In addition to my work in labor, I have engaged in extensive advocacy work around housing and homelessness. I provided legal aid through the Housing Rights Clinic of the New College of California School of Law, co-founded the “Chicago Anti-Poverty Law Collective,” and – as a staff attorney for the San Francisco Bar Association’s Eviction Defense for Homeless Advocacy Project/Justice and Diversity Center -- I provided eviction defense for low-income tenants. In 2016, I became the lead organizer and general counsel for the National Union of the Homeless and the California Homeless Union Statewide Organizing Council.

I have tremendous respect for the teaching profession through my family’s long-standing roots in education. My father, a World War II veteran, went to LACC on the GI Bill and later taught classes on counseling returning soldiers. My mother was a decades-long special education instructor and United Teachers of Los Angeles activist. And my second-oldest daughter teaches social work at Long Beach State and works as a consultant to an L.A. Area school district.

My family is engaged in education, activism and service. My son is a fire fighter with the U.S. Forest Service, my oldest daughter works at Starbucks in Dallas, Texas where last month she helped lead a successful union drive, and my youngest is currently majoring in astrophysics at U.C. Santa Cruz. My wife advises physicians as a medical science liaison.

I have a JD from the New College of California School of Law, admitted to the Bar in 1999.

I am a retired EVC Associate Faculty Member. I was on the AFT6157 negotiating team for 12 years, served as a grievance officer for 5 years, and also was on the Executive Board. I really believe in Faculty Unions and was proud to be a part of the team that moved Associate Faculty from an hourly salary rate to the salary schedule, along with many other improvements to the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions.
